- The reduction in the size of the field during a multiple round stroke play tournament. The cut is usually set so that a fixed number of players, plus anyone tied for that place, or anyone within a certain number of strokes of the lead will participate in the subsequent round(s) (typically 65–70 and ties; The Masters is top 50 and ties). Rarely, tournaments may have more than one cut with players missing the secondary cut commonly designated as “made cut, did not finish”, or “MDF”.
- A shot similar to a fade, a cut curves from left to right (for a right-handed player), but is generally higher in trajectory.
